Swami Ramtirtha’s Vedantic English Poetry and India’s Knowledge Systems
Completed and submitted in 2005 to the Department of English, Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, and awarded the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in 2008, this doctoral research presents a comprehensive literary and philosophical study of Swami Ramtirtha’s Vedantic English poetry composed during his stay in the United States of America (1902–1904).
The study explores how the profound principles of Advaita Vedanta, a cornerstone of India’s Knowledge Systems (IKS), were expressed through English poetry for a global audience. By examining themes of universal consciousness, self-realization, divine love, and the unity of existence, the research highlights Swami Ramtirtha’s significant contribution to the international dissemination of India’s philosophical heritage.
It further contributes to the academic disciplines of Indology, Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), Oriental Studies, comparative literature, and cross-cultural intellectual history.

A Historic Poetic Tribute
One of the most cherished recognitions associated with Rama in the Eyes of Iqbal came from Justice Dr. Javid Iqbal, distinguished jurist, scholar, and son of the legendary philosopher-poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal.
In his message dated 25 September 2006 from Lahore, Justice Dr. Javid Iqbal acknowledged the profound spiritual friendship between Swami Ramtirtha and Allama Iqbal, describing their relationship as one of deep spiritual affinity that transcended geographical and cultural boundaries.
Reflecting on Swami Ramtirtha’s final spiritual journey in 1906, he recalled that Allama Iqbal composed a moving poetic tribute in his memory. He welcomed the publication of Rama in the Eyes of Iqbal, noting that presenting the poem with its translation and interpretation would preserve and celebrate the “spiritual togetherness” of these two great visionaries.
Justice Dr. Javid Iqbal further observed that such a publication would serve as a lasting symbol of the shared spiritual heritage of the Indian subcontinent and would strengthen the bonds of understanding through the enduring friendship between Rama and Iqbal.
His gracious endorsement remains a treasured acknowledgement of the historical, literary, and spiritual significance of this work.
